My Many Birthday Cakes

My birthday was last week, and I had four birthday cakes. Here’s one Marty made. She’s the secretary of the Math Department at Biola:

Blueberry birthday cake

She knows my favorite number is 38. The card says: “Your favorite # written in base blueberry”

When I showed up to class later that day, there was a cake on the desk from one of my students:

As you can see, I didn’t think to take a picture until after I had eaten some.

I like ice cream cake. So I bought two ice cream cakes myself. A Mudd Pie for my roommates and me, and a small cake from Baskin Robbins for my group at church. As you can see, the Mudd Pie suffered the same fate before I could get a picture:

I went to Baskin Robbins for the ice cream cake. They will write anything you want on the cake. “What do you want to write on the cake?” they asked. “Nothing,” I said. Here’s what the cake looked like when I opened it up:

(Note: Okay, to be honest, they double-checked, I knew it was going to have “Nothing” written on it. But I thought it was funny.)

You didn’t have to tell us that you knew it was gonna say “nothing.” Leaving it as an unknown makes it more fun hermeneutically. Again, happy birthday.

Did you teach base blueberry in your Nature of Math class?
