Ashes, Ashes

Ash on my car

The fires continued to burn last night. This morning, there was a little bit of ash everywhere. This is what my car looked like. Notice how I wisely left the sunroof open so that the ash is evenly distributed on the inside as well as the outside of the car.

I looked closely at the ash to see if I could see anything recognizable, like newsprint. I didn’t find any, but this is a picture of one piece:

Last night, we were speculating about what these pieces of ash used to be. Mostly likely just trees, I said. A house, someone said. Someone’s yearbook, my friend Rachel suggested. My friend Adam was a little less sympathetic: someone’s puppy they accidentally left in the house.
