The journey of a thousand miles…

The old saying goes:

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

But I think in modern times, we could change it to:

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a push back.

In an airplane. As in when they push back the plane from the gate. As you’re sitting in your seat, all buckled up, with your electronic devices stowed, you know the journey’s begun once you feel the plane start moving backwards.

This morning, my journey of 950 miles began at 4:00am, when I woke up in Redmond, Washington, home of Microsoft. I had to teach class at 10:30am at Biola. We left around 4:20am, got to Sea-Tac airport by 5:00, and were on a plane by 6:00.

The whole morning, I was feeling restless, just hoping everything would go smoothly so I could make it to class on time. The plane arrived at LAX 20 minutes later than it’s scheduled 8:30 arrival. We had thought about packing only carry-on luggage in order to speed the arrival process, but with the new restrictions on liquids in carry-ons, it was too inconvenient. So we had to wait for our luggage. We were out of the terminal by 9:35am. We got to my car about 10 minutes later, and were able to get to my house in La Mirada by 10:15am. That left 15 minutes. I had already ironed the clothes I was going to wear, and gotten all my notes together for class.

In the end, I walked in to class at 10:29:38am.  So, after a journey of 1000 miles, lasting six and a half hours, I made it on time with 22 seconds to spare.
