Desktop Search for Eudora Email – Use X1

Most of us have hundreds or thousands of old emails. The best way to make all those emails useful is to use a Desktop Search.

I tried for a while to figure out how to get Google Desktop Search (GDS) to index my Eudora email messages. In the process of searching, I discovered that Google might not be the best desktop search. As much as I like Google’s search plus all of the cool things they’re working on, there are some major limitations. First of all, you don’t have much control over when and what it indexes. You decide during installation which folders it searches, and if you want to change it, you have to uninstall then reinstall. Also, it only searches the first 5000 characters of each document.

I recommend X1 Enterprise Client instead. It’s been around for a while. The only downside was the $75 cost. However, this spring that disappeared, and it is now free! It’s a great program. It automatically reads all kinds of formats (including Eudora email), and can preview the documents. Download it for free at

I just installed this last week, and I love the kind of access it gives me to all my email and documents.

    Hi Matthew,

Thanks for the tip. I am going to try out X1 for searching my email. So far I have been pretty happy with Google Desktop – but there are some limitations I am unhappy with.

The Google desktop version I am using allows you to easily change where and what it searches without a reinstall. When you open the desktop search page, there is a link that says “Desktop Preferences”. This might be something new since the last time you had it…

    Nice blog…
